Before we left the store, I got her laughing again. I walked up to one of the guys behind the counter and asked, “What comic would you buy for a girl you liked?”

The dude glanced at Molly, who rolled her eyes at me but also smiled and blushed, so I knew I was on the right track. Turning back to me, he said, “Depends. What is this girl I like into?”

I interpreted his words and mine. “Well, she’s a badass who plays the drums and breaks boundaries, but she’s also secretly super girly—like she wears pink when no one’s looking.” I emphasized the sign for “pink” when I was talking, and then when I was finished talking to him, I added a side note in sign only, “Pink not penis, Molly. Gawd.”

Next to me she, started giggling.

The dude looked at her and asked, “You like fantasy?” I interpreted. She nodded. “Right. Okay then, I suggest you go with Sleepless, man. It’s a romantic fantasy about a knight who takes a vow of sleeplessness so he can be ever vigilant over the princess he protects from an assassin.”

Sounded good. “Two copies, please.”

The guy left us waiting at the register as he ran off to grab the books. And Molly asked me, “Two copies?”

“I want to read it too,” I answered.

“Are we starting a book club?” she teased.

“Totally,” I snarked, making a face that said, duh, before I signed, “It’s called the Vinyl Frontier.”

In response to that moment of pure genius, she gave me a full-on crackle, complete with snort. And I’m not sure what it was about hearing her make that goofy sound, but I couldn’t stop myself. I put my arm around her, pulled her into my armpit, leaned down and gently pressed my lips to hers.

She wasn’t expecting it. It wasn’t the kind of kiss you saw coming, the kind where you closed your eyes, and time stopped so your lips could slowly drift toward one another. Nope, this was a stolen kiss. The sweet, casual kiss of a man who already thought of her lips as his.

The second it happened, I worried. Panic at my boldness made my grip on her shoulder start to slip, and I thought to release her, but then she pushed up on her tiptoes, tipping her chin and bringing her mouth closer to mine. Um…can I just say, dude, excellent.

I lifted my left hand and cradled her cheek, deepening the connection of our lips. Behind the counter, the dude, who had returned, unbeknownst to us, cleared his throat. At that moment, I wished I was like her and couldn’t hear him.
