Chapter Twenty-Nine

Jill

Ollie had walked Alan through everything he had relayed to me. And when he missed a detail, I either prompted or filled it in for him.

Alan ran a hand through his hair as he shook his head. “I’m at a loss for words.”

“But Dad, you have to understand. I didn’t know Grant would send the photo to Mr. Tiller and threaten him.”

“I know, but he did, and it’s done. It just doesn’t look very good.”

“It looks terrible, Alan.”

“Hold on, Jill. There’s nothing criminal about photographing two people on a balcony.”

“But he threatened Errol with violence.”

“Let’s be clear here. Grant threatened Errol with violence. Not Ollie.”

I turned to my son. “Are you telling us the truth about not knowing anything about what Grant had planned?”

“I swear, Mom. I’m telling the truth. I was shocked when Grant told me, but at the same time, I knew he was angry about what had happened. It messed with his head.”

“I can’t believe Mrs. Walker cheated,” Mia said. “How did her husband not find out? I mean, they’re in the same building.”

Ollie shrugged. “I don’t know. I never really asked questions. I only listened to Grant when he needed to vent.”

“Alan, should we talk to the Walkers? I think we need to get this out in the open.”

“You can’t do that, mom. Grant’s dad doesn’t know.”

“Ollie’s right. That’s a private issue for their family to deal with. As for the threat—I don’t think Grant had anything to do with Errol’s death.”

“Geez, Dad, you think Grant killed Mr. Tiller?”

“I just said I don’t think so. I’m trying to think of what the police might be thinking. Right now, they’re investigating the cause of his death. There’s a chance they might poke around in his email and find the one Grant sent.”

“And that’s exactly why I’m wondering if we should at least talk to Kelly,” I said.

“Jill, Ollie didn’t send the email. He took the picture, and so what? I say we wait and see how this plays out for now.”

“God, Ollie, you need to stop taking pictures of people,” Mia said. “Who else are you taking pictures of? I hope people at school don’t find out. I might—”

“Mia, that’s enough,” I said. “Not a word of what we discussed here to anyone. Is that understood?”

“Fine.”

“Ollie, is there anything else you need to tell us?” I asked. “Because now would be the time to get it out.”

Ollie broke eye contact with me, and I knew the answer right then and there.

“Ollie?”

“Ollie, just spit it out already,” Mia said.

“Shut up!” he shot back at his sister.

“Mia, not another word from you,” I said. “In fact, go to your room.”

“Why? I think I should hear what Ollie has to say. I’m just as much a part of this family as Ollie, and this will affect me, too.”

I sighed. “Just keep your comments to yourself unless we ask for your opinion.”

“Come on, Ollie. What else is there?” Alan asked.

“Okay, I want to repeat what I said before. If I
