Jero bit his tongue the whole way to Rainbow Grove Primary School, as if he might yell his real thoughts to the trees along the sandy path if he didn’t. It was a fifteen-minute walk usually, but now he was running, his head a blur. So much for not contemplating that there might be a real problem; his phone was still silent. Which meant no one had seen her yet.

‘Aayla!’ His voice carried on the breeze, disturbing a chicken pecking the path ahead, and two tourists wielding cameras and giant backpacks.

What if she’d been kidnapped, stolen right off school property?

What if one of those fishermen from the illegal trawler had come to exact revenge? Of course, they probably wouldn’t recognise him, or her. They were still incarcerated anyway, awaiting trial as far as he knew.

But what if...what if...what if...?

Telling him not to worry just proved how little Ivy knew him, or anyone else who was trying to be the best parent for their child. You worried all the time. There was barely a moment when you didn’t worry. You could worry all damn day and all night if you stopped to think about the dangers your child might inadvertently wander into on the path of life, all while you were looking the other way.

Not that Ivy had any real reason to know that, he reminded himself. She hadn’t known much in the way of parenting. She’d barely been around a child before meeting Aayla.

He admonished himself, kicking a pebble in his path and apologising to a sleeping dog as it landed in front of his nose and woke him up. There he was again, being hard on Ivy, when really he should be being harder on himself. Ivy had been nothing but great for Aayla so far; the rest was in his head. A result of his own guilt over upsetting the status quo, which could in turn, if he wasn’t more careful, upset Aayla.

Aayla could pick things up from a mile away, every bit of chemistry and tension. She knew something was up with him and Ivy, now that he thought about it. She’d been adamant that Ivy read to her on the boat, and she’d been asking to hang out with her ever since their return.

He’d told her no, kept her just as busy as him on other things...but he wasn’t proud of himself for it.
