Given his return to the field in less than twenty-four hours, Bora used part of the morning settling down in his new office. Through the window, left open to dissipate the heat from Sohl’s fireplace, he could make out Pozzi’s villa past the lemon groves and espaliers in neighbouring gardens. Who knows, from the second floor, Annie’s tall-standing Mespilai might be visible as well. “There’s a plant in Rhodes that children call ‘forgetfulness’,” she’d told him on Thursday night. “Nobody knows what it looks like, because, as soon as you step on it, you begin to wander. You ramble aimlessly without a care, and sometimes forget the way home. Once they found me so far, they didn’t understand how I could have walked all that distance. Has it ever happened to you?” Then, without waiting for his answer, “Sometimes it happens where there’s no sprig, no field, but you get lost all the same.”

Before lunch, Bora made an appointment to see Pozzi, enquired about Field Marshal Kesselring’s transfer to a hospital in nearby Riva and wrote a few lines in his diary.
