“Oh, One-Twenty! Black Fox Ten says she doesn’t have anything kosher.”

“Nothing kosher butchered, but there’s no dairy or pork, just lamb. I figure God won’t mind in this situation.”

“I’m not picky on missions,” Sam said as he strode into the kitchen. Katja was giving a freshly shaved and showered Amos Auman a bowl of some sort of meat stew. She quickly took in her comrade’s appearance and gave a nod of approval.

“Good, the uniform fits you,” Katja said. Amos' gaze flitted to Sam’s uniform, and the fugitive’s shoulders stiffened when he realized that Black Fox 120 had shorn Franz Keidel’s garments. The newly clean-shaven Russian wore a fresh, slightly rumpled ash-grey outfit, the uniform of Viktor Naden. He’d even donned an SS cap and polished jackboots.

“I’ll be a convincing SS man?” Sam said, taking a seat beside Amos and watching the fugitive squirm out of the corner of his eye.

“From a distance, just don’t open your mouth,” Katja advised, giving the Russian a bowl of soup. He finished it even though his gut was roiling. Amos somehow downed a third bowl—it was a wonder he was so small if he could eat like that.

“Where’s Twenty-Seven?” Sam asked as he and Amos handed Katja their empty dishes.

“Basement,” she answered, gesturing towards a door in the other room. “Packing you some supplies. We’re not very neat in this house, so she had trouble finding a canteen. She’ll be finished in a moment. Black Fox One will be sending Fifty-Six. You know the code.”

“Right. What time?”

“Thirty minutes.”

“Enough time for a drink, then. Have any vodka?”

“You think it’s a good idea to drink on a mission?” Katja said, her voice becoming teasingly maternal.

“I’m Russian, I’ll be fine,” Sam assured her, letting the corner of his lip curl slightly. Amos and Katja both chuckled.

“All right,” Katja said. “But just a little to soothe your nerves.”

Sam watched as she reached into one particular cabinet, pulled out a vodka bottle, poured him a shot, and put it back. He downed it quickly, earning a low whistle from Amos.

“Wow. I think I’d die if I did that.” Amos chuckled. “Could barely keep down a mug of beer.”

“Germans are weaklings,” Sam said, turning his small glass upside-down on the table. “Ten, will you excuse us? I want to have a chat with Amos before we go.”

“A chat about…?” she said.

“Personal matter. Mutual friend,” Sam explained brusquely, glancing at Amos, whose eyes shimmered. Their only mutual “friend” was Franz Keidel.

“All right,” Katja sighed. “We’ll be ready to go in a moment. Don’t be long.”

“We won't. C’mon, Amos.”

Eagerly, Amos followed Black Fox 120 up the stairs, his enthusiastic stride only faltering when they passed Heidi’s room and Sam urged him to be quiet lest they wake the child.

“Here,” Sam said, opening the door to Viktor and Katja’s room. Amos might have noticed that the blanket and sheets had been stripped off the bed, but he was too distracted by a folded-up blood-smattered uniform sitting in the midst of the barren mattress.

“Oh! It’s Franz’s uniform!” Amos cried happily, running to the bed and picking it up.
