‘Knock, knock,’ Cathy said, poking her head around James’s door. ‘Peace offering.’ She produced a mug of tea and placed it on the desk in front of him.

James sighed and leaned back in his chair.

‘Before you say anything,’ she said, ‘I know you’re right. There has been a lot going on and I’ve been taking on too much. I’m always snappy when I’m pressured and it’s always the people who mean the most to me that get the worst of it.’ She smiled. ‘Sorry that was you. You’re very important to me.’

He picked up his mug and took a sip. ‘After all these years and still, you make a rubbish cup of tea.’ His face was deadly serious, and her heart sank. But then, his features relaxed and he smiled. ‘Oh, sit down, for goodness’ sake. You’re a pig-headed so-and-so at times.’

‘I couldn’t sleep last night,’ she confessed. ‘I kept going over and over what I said to you.’

He shrugged. ‘I’ve forgotten, but I’m sure you must know I’m not being deliberately interfering.’

She nodded. ‘I’ll see Stuart,’ she said. ‘I’ve already decided. He told me to book in anyway. I’m overdue an MOT.’

‘Go later today. Linda’s in and there are free appointments so we can do without you for an hour.’
