1. Village sheikhs have historically played roles acting as ambassadors between archaeologists and local villagers (James 2001: 26, 93; Drower 1995,78, 94–95). I did not know this when I began my research instead I went to the sheikh because my years of experience in Egypt trained me to do this. I learned that this was a popular practice by early foreign archaeologists while reading for this research.
2. The Sunnah is an Islamic holy book where close companions of the prophet Mohamed record the Prophets deeds and behavior.
3. The Rashidun Caliphs were the first four Caliphs, or religious rulers of the Islamic empire, who ruled after the death of the Prophet Mohamed (ad 570–632) the founder of Islam. The four Rashidun Caliphs are Abu Bakr (ad 632-634), Umar ibn al-Khattab (ad 634-644), Uthman ibn Affan (ad 644-656), and Ali Ibn Abi Talib (ad 656-661). For many Muslims including my interlocutors in Kom Trougah these first four Caliphs or religious leaders represent pure Islamic leaders. After these first four Caliphs, many of my interlocutors including the sheikh felt that the Caliphate was corrupted. This is discussed again later in this book.
4. Allah: the Arabic term for God.
5. The narrative recited by this villager references the story of the flood as recited in the Koran. By reciting this particular story, this villager is unaware that this story has earlier Christian and Jewish origins. It is important that my reader understand that the Koranic version of the story of the Flood is not the same and the Christian or Jewish versions. Also this story is attached to multiple histories that this villager was not aware he was referencing which has more to do with the history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam then with Colonialism and the Pharaohs. This narrative is an example of looking at colonial history and Pharaonic history through an Islamic filter.
6. One of the inspectors I worked with ran a kutub for children in his village.
