As an estimate, the thigh bone, or femur, usually measures around a quarter of a person’s height.

EVIDENCE BAG CHALLENGE

You will need: tape measure, some string, paper and pen

Test out whether a femur is really around a quarter of your height. Measure the length of your thigh bone from your knee to your hip.

Now measure your height. Write your measurements on some paper.

To work out whether your femur is a quarter the length of your height, multiply the femur length by four. Is the result your height?

Try measuring friends and family and see if anyone has a perfect 1:4 ratio of femur length to total body height. It often works better with adults.
