Chapter 17

Double Trouble

“Careful, Lou,” Lexie said as I crashed into her for the third time.

“Sorry!” The dread of returning to class and more of Mrs. Snyder’s wrinkly winks stirred up butterflies in my stomach. Those butterflies made my handstands wobble, and I kept bashing into Lexie, who smashed into Nakessa.

“Let’s just work on the play,” Nakessa suggested, as she brushed dirt off her jeans.

“Good idea,” I agreed.

“I’ll get you, you nasty kid!” Nakessa shouted, acting like the ghost principal. She chased Lexie around the tree.

I glanced over my shoulder at the school. Maybe Mrs. Snyder had realized she let me go for recess. Would she start lecturing me the moment I stepped one baby toe into the classroom? How was I ever going to—

Lexie cartwheeled on the grass right in front of me, blocking the school from view. “Earth to Lou, where are you?”

Nakessa followed Lexie with a front walkover. “You’ve drifted…bad.”

“I’m sorry. It’s just—”

Brrrriiinng!

Betrayed by the bell, I trudged across the field. Kids pushed past me, through the doors, and down the hallway. The butterflies in my stomach flapped like wild turkeys. The closer I got to the classroom, the faster they fluttered. With a deep breath, I scurried into the room, hoping to get to my desk without Mrs. Snyder noticing me. I kept my eyes on the floor, ignoring the loud whispers that surrounded me. In seconds flat I reached my desk. Relief washed over me. The Shadow Phantom had not croaked out my name. Only once I sat down, did I dare glance up. Mrs. Muswagam stood smiling at the front of the room. What was our principal doing here?

“Good morning, grade five,” she said.

“Good morning, Mrs. Muswagam,” we replied.

Lexie passed me a handful of Sweet Tarts. I popped two in my mouth. Sweet tang zinged my tongue.

“Mrs. Snyder went home sick, so I get to be your teacher. Hopefully, she’ll be back tomorrow.”

This was the best news I’d heard all year—No! All century! “Woo—” I cheered.

“Lou!” Lexie hissed, cutting off my hoo. “Stop it.”

I glanced at Lexie. She frowned at me. “Don’t be mean.”

I peeked back at Nakessa, who dropped her gaze.

“Lou,” Mrs. Muswagam said.

Heat flared across my cheeks, as I turned to her. “Yes?” I squeaked.

“I need an assistant. Will you please come up here?” It was one of those questions that teachers ask, that isn’t really a question. And this was the principal. A unique principal, but still a principal.

“Ooooh, Lou’s in trouble again,” Big Jack whispered. “Here comes double trouble.”

Easing myself out of my seat, I glared at him. I very, very badly wanted to growl at him, I gritted my teeth to stop myself and inched up the aisle.

“No one’s in trouble, Jack, unless you keep teasing other students,” Mrs. Muswagam said. “I simply need someone with Lou’s imagination to help me with the art lesson.”

My head popped up. My jaw relaxed. On top of being unique, she had incredibly good hearing. In-hu-man-ly good hearing. She might possibly be an actual alien.
