I reread it, my body sinking so deep into the seat, I could feel the unevenness of the road. When I looked up, Bo was looking at me, and his stare created a fuzziness inside me. He tilted his head to the side, his freckles falling, and I felt myself melt into the floor. Was this what living felt like?

When the air refilled my lungs, I thought long and hard about what Mini had said: What if Bo kissed me and turned into a zombie? I knew the zombies weren’t real…though, really, I didn’t know….

That last zombie looked eerily disturbing and after me for some reason.

But would the kiss feel weird and squishy and rotten?

And could kissing a zombie turn me into the unknown—could it strip away the rest of the sanity I had?

Only time would tell.

There was commotion. Apparently, Andrew wanted to play Call of Duty, but Jesus wasn’t down—he suggested playing some impostor game instead, and Andrew stomped his foot and huffed.

Mika whispered to me, “Don’t mind him. He’s a big baby sometimes.”

Jesus scratched his nose, his eyes glossing over. “So, are you in or out? Our waiting room is already filling up.”

“Fine. What’s the code?”

Mika snickered and Bo ruffled Andrew’s shaggy blond hair. “Glad you’re playing, man.”

Andrew rolled his eyes. “Shut up. Let’s do this. You two better hope I’m not the impostor, ’cuz your asses are dead.”

“Hey!” Charlie chimed in. “I’m playing, too. And don’t even think about killing me off. I’ll get the squad to turn on you in no time.” She batted her long eyelashes.

“Ha. Yeah, we’ll see about that.” Andrew scoffed.

Mika bumped my shoulder and rolled her eyes playfully. “You’ll get used to it.”

I smiled, and I noticed she was reading a long document on her phone. “You’re not playing?”

She pursed her lips. “I don’t have time for these squids,” she joked. “Plus, I’d dominate if I played anyway. Figured I should let them win while they can.”

Hm. I chewed my bottom lip, leaned in. Instant word vomit. “Hey, so, do you know if Charlie is cool with me being here today?” Shit. Shouldn’t have done that. Shouldn’t have asked. Too late now.

Mika furrowed her brows. Damn. “Charlie? Yeah, of course.” Her voice was lowered. “She’s like the glue in all of our relationships. Maybe she’s more handsy than she needs to be at times, but honestly, she just wants everyone to be happy.” Mika’s eyes brightened. “Why? Are you worried about something?”

I leaned back, breathed deeply. “No, no. Just curious, is all. Thanks.” I forced a smile, looked at my phone, and pretended to be disengaged, even though I could still feel Mika’s eyes on me. I didn’t know what to think, but maybe that was the problem. Maybe I was overthinking.

Thirty minutes later, we pulled onto a gravel road, and I could hear Charlie directing Rico on where to turn next. The van went off road, past a small stream, and through a few trees until we reached a clearing.

In the distance, I could see a small wooden stage.
