Add the Bedding

This is the part that will make all the difference for warmth. You’ll need to fill the interior of the shelter with leaves or other debris, and because this compresses when you lay on it, you’ll need to stuff it multiple times. Pack the complete interior cavity with debris, filled all the way up to the roof beam and remembering all the corners (these corners can become “cold spots” if ignored). To compress it, crawl in feet first and lay on it. Crawl out and stuff the remaining space with more debris. Lay on this as well, and then fill the remaining space a third time. Leave this third stuffing in place, creating two layers of compressed vegetation underneath you (as a mattress) and one fluffy layer covering you. It’s also helpful to leave a pile of debris just outside the door, which can be used to plug the door, to fill in gaps you find in the middle of the night, or as a pillow.
