These Principles Apply to All of Us

It is also worth pointing out that although this discussion focused on survivors of early trauma and abuse, the principle discussed actually applies to virtually everyone. We are all in need of retraining and recovery from malformation, whether from overt abuse or just common lies that affect all of us due to life in a broken world.

Take for example a woman in her late twenties who has been rejected by several romantic interests over the years and wants desperately to find the love of her life. She may grow more fearful of relationships as time goes on and decide that in order to protect herself and still keep her options open she must try harder to manage men’s impressions of her, based on a belief that the most important thing is to keep them from leaving. Another woman with a similar history may decide that she needs to lower her standards, because the most important thing is to not be alone. Yet another may give up on relationships altogether based on the belief that men are impossible. All of these represent defective strategies that arise out of value systems that have been shaped by experience. What is missing in each case is a recognition that their own internal values are interfering with their responses to life and their future, and that they need a perspective that is bigger than what they can grasp with their own resources.

We have all developed rather elaborate schemes that are filled with misperceptions of who we are, who God is, and how we are to live. To whatever extent we persist in those patterns we may actually be participating in our own undoing. That is, of course, the enemy’s strategy behind using lies. And that is why we all need to seek the truth of God regarding our own life.
