They had dinner again the following week. This time when he came to pick her up, she asked if he’d like a drink. He said he would. She went into the kitchen to fill the ice bucket. When she returned, he was standing with his back to the room, looking at the framed photograph of Max on the mantel above the fireplace. At first, she’d kept the picture of him in his uniform there, but after a while she and Chloe had decided they preferred the more informal photograph of him taken before he went into the service. In the military picture, the brim of his hat shadowed his eyes so you couldn’t really see them, and as a newly minted officer he was trying too hard to look serious. He ended up looking unhappy. In the civilian shot, his wide mouth hovered on the cusp of a smile that made you want to know what he found so amusing. She stood holding the ice bucket, watching Ezra take in the picture. Then he must have sensed her behind him, because he turned. So far none of this was odd. What she did find peculiar was that he didn’t say anything about the photograph or Max. Then it came to her. She’d been a widow—she still hated the word—long enough to understand his reaction, or lack of it. Death embarrassed people. They didn’t want to talk about it. They didn’t want even to think about it. Doctors were no exception, despite their intimate, if secondhand, knowledge of the experience. Max used to joke that they became doctors to keep their own illness and death at arm’s length. The ploy obviously didn’t work. The picture of Max must have reminded Ezra of the fact.
