The walk back to the castle is strange. Elsie feels uncomfortable being outside and so open to attack, and Dayle is so quiet that the silence feels more awkward than companionable.
âDayle, do you want to go back? Do you want to punish them? Will it help?â
Dayle kicks at the grass and then kicks again and then picks up a handful of rocks and throws them as they walk.
âNo. Not really. Iâm so angry, I feel cheated. Why realise after I left, after Joey left? Why drive your children away and then realise what ass hats youâve been? Why didnât they change for us, when we were still there to enjoy it, to forgive, to mend? Iâm angry.â
âI get it. I think you should be angry. But youâll get over it. If neither you nor your brother were enough to make them change, then they donât deserve either of you. Theyâll live alone and sad and die alone and sad. And I wonât let you dwell on them. But I am queen, so if you want to punish them, then I can.â
âThank you. I enjoy having a queen for a friend.â
âI enjoy having a pirate queen for a friend.â
âDo you want to come down to the docks? I need to get word out about Hardy; get people looking for him and find out if heâs left Allaire.â
âYes. I feel safe with you. Nervous. But safe.â
âI promise you â if Hardy tries to show his handsome face now, Iâll murder him with my eyes shut.â
âIt would be easy for you.â
âIt would. I have been in too many fights. Iâm quick and my instincts are good. Weâll take a few soldiers with us, but I promise you, Hardy wonât hurt you while Iâm by your side.â
âThank you. And have I convinced you to stay here? Or is it too much with your parents still here?â
âIâll feel bad about them for a while â I wonât be able to help it; like picking at a scab, even though you know it will hurt, and even though you know it will bleed. But then Iâll forget them. Iâm good at pretending everythingâs all right.â
âI donât want you to pretend. Itâs important to me that my subjects are happy. Dayle, I want you to be happy.â
âI know. Youâre sweet. Probably too sweet to be a queen. But then if I stay and join your council of esteemed guidance givers, I can look after you and stop you being a pushover.â
âIâm not a pushover.â
âI think you could be. If youâre not careful. I can help.â
âPlease help. You could live at the castle and marry Finneas and have little soldier babies.â
Dayle scoffs. âSoldier babies.â
âYes. Soldier babies. Think about it.â
âYou really want me to stay. To give up being the pirate queen?â
âYouâll always be the pirate queen, but you could retire. Just think about it.â
âI am.â
The noise of the docks makes it harder to talk, but Elsie is happy to watch Dayle. She has such confidence as she approaches
