En route to Genghis Khan International Airport Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Jackâs watch pulsed a signal to his wrist and he grabbed his phone, reading the secure message that had just arrived. He shook his head then looked in the rearview mirror.
âSo, your professor friends are heading to some strip mine in the middle of nowhere?â
Tommyâs eyes widened. âThatâs what it is?â
âIf those coordinates are correct.â
Tommy smiled at Mai then leaned forward between the seats. âSo, Dylan got our message?â
âSomebody did.â
âOh, thank God! What are you going to do?â
âIâm getting you two out of the country. When Iâve accomplished that, then Iâll deal with the next problem.â
Mai squeezed forward. âBut they could be in danger!â
Jack shrugged. âTheyâve got a long drive ahead of them. The biggest danger they have at this moment is a flat tire or a roadblock, neither of which I can help them with once it becomes a problem. Right now, weâve got armed gunmen who actively want you dead.â
Tommy went pale. âWhat makes you say that? They didnât kill us.â
âThat was because they had you, and wanted to take you somewhere where they could make sure they knew everything you did. Now that youâve been compromised, the smart thing to do is kill you.â
Maiâs face clouded with fear. âIs that what you would do?â
He hated the answer that came from his mouth. âWithout hesitation.â
Tommy groaned, sitting back. âLovely. And youâre supposed to be one of the good guys.â
Jack chuckled. âItâs all a matter of whose side of the equation youâre on, kid. Right now, Iâm on your side, theyâre not.â They pulled up to the airport drop-off zone. âNow, your new luggage is in the trunk. Youâve got your passports. Just go inside, act normal, and pick up your tickets. Go through security as soon as you can, go to your gate, and get on your flight. Donât talk to anyone unless theyâre staff. Anyone else, just pretend you donât speak the language. Donât talk to each other. I find pretending to be asleep helps. Just donât actually fall asleep and miss your flight. Stay calm, and youâll be fine. Remember, youâve done nothing wrong. The bad guys are all outside.â
Tommy gripped Maiâs hand. âWhat about the authorities?â
Jack shook his head. âThat all depends on how deep the pockets go that are involved, and if theyâve had time to get your information to their contacts. My guess is youâre okay, since everything has gone down in the past few minutes.â He jerked a thumb toward the terminal. âNow go! Youâve got ninety minutes.â
