CHAPTER 25
âHow did you know to check how if she was alive?â
My body defrosted a bit, and my teeth stopped chattering, but the cold sunk deep into my bones. âYou mean when I checked her pulse on her neck pulse point? Sometimes it is easier to check on the neck than the wrist.â I looked away from the fire towards Henry and noticed the dumbfounded look on his face. It didnât matter to me if he thought I was a crazy old woman or if I knew what I was talking about. I had taken a first aid class when I was younger, and I had watched enough movies to feel confident in how I checked Janet out. âI suppose I could have checked her wrist instead, but I figured it would have been more difficult finding her pulse there. Either way, it was going to be faint. Pale lips and skin told me she had lost a lot of blood. Her breathing was pretty much non-existent.â The fire in the hearth crackled. My toes crept from under the blanket towards the hot flames. âI knew there was not much we could do for her but offer comfort.â
Henry went to the cabinets, pulled out two cups. Steam drifted out of the cups as he poured hot water from the kettle into each one. âThere is no tea, but the hot water should help warm you up.â
âThank you,â I said, as I took the hot cup of water from him and blew over it. I gripped the hot cup, warming my hands. I blew over the cup and took a sip. The hot water warmed my insides. âIt's going to get dark soon. Do you think whoever did this is going to come back?â
âNot tonight, mayhap in the morn.â
âThanks for rinsing out my clothes. How did you know how to do that? I thought Lords had servants to do that for them,â I said as I gave him a smile. I enjoyed poking fun at his title, since he tried to hide it. Being born in the United States in the 20th century, I had never met someone that had a title. I had expected someone with a title to act as though they were better than everyone else, but Henry proved me wrong.
âAs you can see, I have no servants here to care for my every request. Unless you want to apply for the position.â He waved his hand around as if to have me look around the small cabin. âDo you really find me incapable of caring for myself?â He asked as he looked over at me.
âNo, not at all.â I scooted closer to him. âWhere I'm from, we don't have royalty. I mean, there is royalty, just not in my country.â
âIâm not royalty.â He scrunched his eyebrows together. âThe colonies are under the English crown andâ¦â
I needed to change the subject before he asked more questions that I didnât want to answer. âI'm not sure I'll ever be warm again.
