Chapter Eleven
It had been my intention to go into the river, but Iâd hoped we would just be able to swim across to the other side, get out and escape that way. Iâd guessed that there wouldnât be any law enforcement choppers in the air yet; the fact that two helicopters had been shot down by missiles would have been reported, and they wouldnât want one of their own birds added to the tally. As far as these guys were concerned, the place was a war zone, and would have to be treated as such.
The way Iâd figured it, I didnât think that the cops would follow us across the river, and it would take them too long to drive around. The nearest bridge was about two miles away, on a circuitous country road route. By the time they managed to get to where they thought we might have crossed, we would be long gone.
But then the quad bike had floated, the current was stronger than Iâd anticipated, and Iâd decided to stay on top for as long as we could manage. That way, we would automatically put distance between us and the cops, and any remaining bad guys.
We were in the water now though, the ATV abandoned, the area around us almost entirely dark, the only light coming from the horizon, where the remains of the helicopters still smoldered away back at the ranch.
Hayden could swim, and had started off strong, but she was gasping for air now, the combination of cold water and fast-flowing current serving to weaken her, and I hooked an arm around her, helped get her head out of the water.
I searched around frantically, trying to get my bearings, work out what we could do. Kane was next to us, able to offer more support if needed. He was a hell of a swimmer, and the cold wasnât affecting him at all.
Up ahead, I saw the vague outline of the bank to my right suddenly disappear, and I focused harder as I forced my head out of the water, trying to recognize what was there, what had happened to the river up ahead.
Then I realized that it was a bend, a very tight bend around to the right, and instinctively understood that if we fought hard, we could cut down the distance we had to cover, take advantage of the terrain and reach that corner of the bank.
I took firmer hold of Hayden, pointed at the dark bank up ahead, and she gasped but nodded her head, and I tapped Kane and pointed and he swam off ahead, scrambling up the bank just to show us it could be done.
We kicked our legs, fighting toward the inner sweep of the bank, and within seconds we were there, and I reached out my arm and grabbed hold of some of the undergrowth that spilled from the bank into the river, arresting our movement, bodies battered by the moving water but going no further, my grip firm;
