Chapter Fifteen

I woke early, showered and ate breakfast, and hit the road.

I saw the tail early on – the first time I’d actually caught someone following me. There were two of them, waiting in a nondescript Ford sedan on the other side of the street. I made a mental note of the license plate, and watched in the reflection of the windows of the women’s institute as one of the men got out of the car to follow me on foot. They’d probably expected me to catch a taxi or something, and walking had caught them off-guard. The rush from the car was what had made it clear who they were, and such a move meant only one of two things – either they were real amateurs, or they had limited resources and had been forced into moving fast, as there was no one else to pick up the tail.

The thought was encouraging; a couple of agents following me around town was okay, although an entire team would be a bit more of a problem. It also indicated that Malone might not have the full support of the DEA on this job, which was comforting; more likely, he led a small cabal of extremists, which would make things a little more manageable.

The fact that I had been so quick to spot these guys made me think that perhaps I hadn’t been followed physically up until now, that I’d wasted time and energy taking precautions that hadn’t been strictly necessary. But that was the thing about precautions – they were a matter of “just in case” – and it was always better to be too careful than not careful enough.

I walked south until I hit the Mall, then began to stroll east, taking in the historic sights as I went – the US Capitol, the Ellipse, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial. I’d been there before, of course – had even been inside the White House twice. The first time was when I’d received the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq, the second when I’d been to speak directly to the current president to discuss finding out what had happened to his secret, illegitimate son.

In the clear blue skies and bright sunshine of late winter, the place was definitely pretty, I decided as I strolled slowly along the Mall.

I wondered why those agents were following me at all. The phone would be telling them where I was, after all. The conclusion I came to was that they wanted to take pictures or video of me as I cased the area – more evidence that could be used against me at a later date.

I checked reflections in the windows of any cars or buildings that I passed, to make sure my friend was still following me. He was wearing spectacles, and I figured that they had an integrated camera, so he could record me without having to make it obvious to everyone. If I was actually going to go through with the assassination, the footage he was taking might be a problem.
