Chapter 25

Macau

Samantha followed Trinity to the private dining room where the maître d’ escorted the two women to their seats before he returned to accompany the male guests into the room. Samantha had a short moment to steady Trinity before her husband, General Xin, proudly strode in with four men following him.

Sean was afforded the place of second in line behind the General, looking dashing in his black dinner suit, but Samantha found his demeanour a little odd in a new disguise accompanied by an awkward walk. He didn’t look comfortable, but she knew his gravitas would dominate the small talk amongst the men. Each of the men bowed to the two women before taking their seats around the gargantuan circular table.

Samantha smiled at General Xin as his eyes gravitated to hers. He wore a dark grey suit with a red tie, perfectly adjusted with a full Windsor knot. He spoke quietly with Sean, who sat to his right, and he appeared to have a dimple that was more pronounced as he spoke. But it was his eyebrows that stood out. A thin but handsome face with the slightest brown eyebrows she had ever seen. They certainly looked fake. Samantha noticed how he leant over to speak to Sean on a couple of occasions, but his eyes creepily swept towards hers every time he spoke into Sean’s ear. She adjusted her dress and felt uncomfortable – but assured that Sean was beginning to settle in. She liked how he drew everyone into the conversation, and how he made sure he cast his eyes to the other generals to ensure he was the centre of attention, hypnotising them using only his eyes and a quiet tone of voice.

In a normal setting he’d be much louder, livelier, throwing a few jokes and charming everyone around him, sucking them into his stories and wit. But for now, Samantha admired his new demeanour, acting as the confident well-spoken Brit selling real estate to his new customers. She wondered what sort of ruse he was spinning for sales of mansions in the South of France. She enjoyed it when his eyes caught hers.

To the left of General Xin, a callow military officer in a baggy suit sat fiddling with an open notebook. A junior officer who would probably be in communication with the general’s protection team covering all the entrances to the tenth floor. Samantha looked to the doorway where a terrifying man with dark eyes stood, then she swept the room with her eyes looking for covert cameras, which she felt sure would be there somewhere. She was right, and in a room a few metres away from her, Bojou watched on with nothing more than a glass of water and a smart phone to keep him company.

General Xin tapped on his crystal glass with a silver spoon and stood to make an announcement. ‘I’m delighted to welcome you all here this evening and very pleased that my wife has arranged for us to meet Mr Cockburn and Miss Birch, who I believe will be married one day.
