Dubois’ Inn Le Chesnay, Kingdom of France

Mrs. Dubois swept the thresh beyond the hold and out the door, the old straw having served its purpose for too long. Her husband would be back before long with a fresh batch, and it would be spread about to once again keep the floor serviceable for her guests.

She looked about.

What guests?

Business kept getting worse, and the only way it would get better would be to give in, yet she refused. Her husband wanted to, but she had threatened to cut him off if he dared.

He had acquiesced, a roll in the hay more important to him than winning an argument.

Though soon they might not have any choice. With word being spread not to frequent their establishment, soon they wouldn’t be able to afford to live off the scraps of those who had no choice but to come here.

She sighed, then cursed the Lord for allowing this to happen to them.

Then immediately apologized.

He understands.

The door swung open behind her as she wiped down a table. “We’re not serving for another hour, but you’re welcome to wait by the fire and warm yourself.”

There was no reply.

She straightened, turning toward the door to find it closed, a man standing in the shadows. “Are you deaf or mute?”

The sound of a sword drawing from a sheath had her heart racing.

She screamed.

But there was no one to hear it, beyond her assailant.

She rushed toward the back and the only other entrance. The sounds of chairs and tables being knocked out of the way as the man pursued her, only caused her to run that much faster, and she cursed for letting herself get so fat.

She pushed through to the back room, the door in sight. She grabbed the handle and threw the door open, glancing over her shoulder as she squeezed through, the frigid cold immediately making its presence felt.

There was no rage in the man’s eyes, just determination.

And she recognized him.

And she knew she should have given in.

She went to the left, along the back of their inn, continuing to scream for help, then rounded the corner. She pushed forward as quickly as she could, and looked back when she heard a grunt then curse, smiling only briefly at the sight of the man having fallen as he made the corner.

She was in the open now, but with the isolated location, there would be no one to help her, and nowhere to hide.

She was going to die.

She prayed for forgiveness of all her sins as the heavy footfalls drew closer, then closed her eyes as he was almost upon her.

So she didn’t see the beast, instead only hearing its angry snarl as it bounded toward her. She opened her eyes and screamed anew as a massive black dog leaped through the air at her. She dropped to her knees and it thankfully flew over her, missing her by mere inches.

But she wasn’t the target.

She turned to see the beast clamp its mighty jaws on the forearm
