CALLING THE PLAYS

Communication is important in all sports, and in football there are several coaches and players scattered throughout the stadium to keep on top of things. The head coach is on the sideline. His offensive and defensive coordinators may be in a booth high above the field. The quarterback is on the field. How do they talk to each other? Through wireless technology.

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan (center) uses a wireless microphone to communicate with the quarterback and other team coaches.

Coaches wear headsets with microphones during games. They talk to one another through the devices. They also send plays to the quarterback, who hears the call through a speaker in his helmet. The signal to the quarterback is synced with the play clock and cuts out when 15 seconds remain before the ball must be snapped. As radio technology has improved, communication has become clearer between coaches and players, even in loud stadiums.
