âIâve missed you too,â Stellaâs hug enveloped me as I tried to wipe away the tears from my cheeks. âCome on, silly, letâs get in the car, I canât wait to see the house,â she said, linking her arm through mine and pulling me towards the exit. âBloody suitcase, itâs got a mind of its own,â Stella swore, laughing as she struggled to control it.
âHow are your parents?â I asked, always slightly nervous about enquiring on their health.
âNot bad, there hasnât been any more naked wandering thankfully. Although I couldnât find my keys the other day, Dad had put them in the microwave to keep them safe. I almost blew the sodding house up,â she sighed, noticing the wide-eyed look on my face. âHonestly, its fine; you have to learn to laugh. I donât think about it too much, itâs just one day at a time. Anyway, itâs Robertâs problem for a couple of days.â
We reached the car and I opened the boot. Together we hauled Stellaâs suitcase in.
âChrist, what have you bought with you?â
âMostly shoes,â Stella shrugged, and we burst into laughter.
On the drive home, Stella told me more about the man sheâd met back in Nottingham. It was early days, but I could tell by how animated she was that she liked him a lot. I was thrilled by the news. Iâd wondered how she was going to meet someone, caring for her parentsâ full time, but, as it turned out, Adam was a carer. He worked with dementia patients and had visited the house to help adapt it. Theyâd hit it off straight away and heâd asked Stella if he could take her out for a drink. Since then, theyâd been on a few dates and things seemed to be going well. I thought about telling her about Nicky, but it wasnât the right time, we were almost home.
When we arrived, I gave Stella a quick tour and let her unpack in the guest room while I made tea. Stella loved the house and its cottage feel; unable to believe we hadnât touched it since we moved in.
âI love the kitchen floor; those tiles are gorgeous. Itâs all so pretty.â
âIt suited us perfectly, all of our furniture fitted in, although they are probably a bit too modern, but itâs so neutral, everything seemed to go together well,â I said, delighted Stella loved it as much as I did.
âStella Crowley,â David exclaimed as he came downstairs, giving Stella a hug. They proceeded to throw insults at each other about their aging appearance, which was something theyâd always done. I was surprised David was home early; he must be making an effort. Stella couldnât believe how tall Charlotte had grown too, when she emerged from her bedroom.
âMy goodness, you get prettier every day, Charlotte. Wonât be long before those boys will be knocking,â teased Stella and David rolled his eyes.
Charlotteâs cheeks glowed pink and she exited the kitchen as fast as she could.
âOr perhaps they are already?â Stella said, her voice sing-song, raising her eyebrows at Charlotteâs sudden departure.
