Chapter Twenty-Three

Dr. Nelson’s research lab

Nansic Headquarters

Indianapolis, Indiana

Dr. Nelson clipped the slide onto the stage of the microscope and adjusted the focus. His breath caught in his lungs, praying the slide would show promising results. The pink tissue came into focus with freckles of blue throughout the nuclei of the nerve cells.

He swallowed and changed to the next slide. Same result. More blue freckles. With an increasingly acidic stomach, he filed through the remaining slides. All the same. The brain tissue in each rat showed cell death.

“You okay Dr. Nelson?” Jim asked from the other lab bench where he’d finished cleaning up the cages and disposing of the carcasses of the test rats.

The doctor straightened from his slumped position. “I’m fine, Jim. Why don’t you head home? We’ll need to start over again tomorrow with the next set.”

“Are you sure? I can stay and help.”

“No. Go home,” Nelson said. “See you in the morning.”

“Goodnight, Doctor,” Jim said and closed the door behind him.

Alone and unobserved, he dialed Marling’s number. It took several seconds for the call to connect. Marling picked up on the third ring.

“Have you stopped the absorption yet?” Marling asked without greeting.

Nelson sighed, his eyes still on the blue freckled slides. “It’s not that simple. I made progress with the affected adrenals so the more immediate endocrine problem is solved, but I can’t stop absorption.”

“Great! So, that’s fixed the immediate anger issues,” Marling said.

“Yes.”

“Good job, Doctor. We can move ahead with production.”

“No, we can’t move forward. I’m telling you I can’t fix the long-term problems,” Nelson insisted. “If we continue—”

“I read your memo.” Marling cut him off. “I also read the side effects won’t show up for twenty to thirty years. It’ll be impossible to link them to our product.”

“You can’t move into production yet. I won’t let you do it.” Nelson stammered.

“As if you have a say,” Marling laughed.

“This isn’t part of the plan,” Nelson whispered. “You’ll ruin everything.”

“Ruin everything? What are you taking about? We aren’t turning away from billions of dollars in profit because of a few hiccups. Do you have any idea what a pesticide that kills all the resistant insects is worth? We’ll completely control the market. Not just in the States but the entire world.”

Nelson pinched the bridge of his nose and spoke under his breath. “Small minded idiots getting in the way of the bigger picture.”

“What?” Marling asked.

“Nothing,” Nelson said, recovering his composure. “The girl. We have no way of locating her.”

“I’m on my way back to the States now. I have some ideas on how to lure her out.”
