Chapter Twenty-Three
Dr. Nelsonâs research lab

Dr. Nelson clipped the slide onto the stage of the microscope and adjusted the focus. His breath caught in his lungs, praying the slide would show promising results. The pink tissue came into focus with freckles of blue throughout the nuclei of the nerve cells.
He swallowed and changed to the next slide. Same result. More blue freckles. With an increasingly acidic stomach, he filed through the remaining slides. All the same. The brain tissue in each rat showed cell death.
âYou okay Dr. Nelson?â Jim asked from the other lab bench where heâd finished cleaning up the cages and disposing of the carcasses of the test rats.
The doctor straightened from his slumped position. âIâm fine, Jim. Why donât you head home? Weâll need to start over again tomorrow with the next set.â
âAre you sure? I can stay and help.â
âNo. Go home,â Nelson said. âSee you in the morning.â
âGoodnight, Doctor,â Jim said and closed the door behind him.
Alone and unobserved, he dialed Marlingâs number. It took several seconds for the call to connect. Marling picked up on the third ring.
âHave you stopped the absorption yet?â Marling asked without greeting.
Nelson sighed, his eyes still on the blue freckled slides. âItâs not that simple. I made progress with the affected adrenals so the more immediate endocrine problem is solved, but I canât stop absorption.â
âGreat! So, thatâs fixed the immediate anger issues,â Marling said.
âYes.â
âGood job, Doctor. We can move ahead with production.â
âNo, we canât move forward. Iâm telling you I canât fix the long-term problems,â Nelson insisted. âIf we continueâ ââ
âI read your memo.â Marling cut him off. âI also read the side effects wonât show up for twenty to thirty years. Itâll be impossible to link them to our product.â
âYou canât move into production yet. I wonât let you do it.â Nelson stammered.
âAs if you have a say,â Marling laughed.
âThis isnât part of the plan,â Nelson whispered. âYouâll ruin everything.â
âRuin everything? What are you taking about? We arenât turning away from billions of dollars in profit because of a few hiccups. Do you have any idea what a pesticide that kills all the resistant insects is worth? Weâll completely control the market. Not just in the States but the entire world.â
Nelson pinched the bridge of his nose and spoke under his breath. âSmall minded idiots getting in the way of the bigger picture.â
âWhat?â Marling asked.
âNothing,â Nelson said, recovering his composure. âThe girl. We have no way of locating her.â
âIâm on my way back to the States now. I have some ideas on how to lure her out.â
