Jayden watched Mikaela swallow. It seemed to be an automatic reaction for her when she was nervous, and he waited her out. If he could just get her to step out of her shell for just a moment, Jayden was convinced he could help her stay out of it permanently.

Someone, somewhere in her past had stomped Mikaela into the ground so hard that she’d never quite gotten back on her feet, but she’d obviously been doing her best to crawl her way through life.

It was a trait to be admired, but Jayden wanted more out of life than that and he found he wanted more for Micky as well, not to mention little Emmy. His heart was absolutely caught by the adorable six-year-old, and the more he pulled back the layers of the mother, the more he found himself wanting her along for the ride as well.

She was cold and hard, yes, but she was also compassionate, determined, courageous, talented and just ripe for adventure. Overcoming her default reactions would practically make her Jayden’s dream girl.

The dinner flew by in a flash and Jayden was all too excited to get her to walk with him on the beach. True to her word, Micky had met him flirt for flirt and Jayden was chomping at the bit to get away from the crowded restaurant. He wanted this woman all to himself.

He signed the receipt with a flourish, then pushed back his chair and got to his feet. Walking around the table, he pulled back Micky’s chair. “Are you up for a walk?” he whispered in her ear, grinning when she shivered.

Micky glanced over her shoulder. “Are your intentions honorable?”

Jayden put a hand to his chest. “How could you question otherwise?” As soon as the question was out of his mouth, he knew it was the wrong one as her smile faltered. Clearing his throat and schooling his features into something more serious, he whispered. “I’ve never taken advantage of a woman before, Mick. I don’t plan to start now.”

Jayden held out his hand and waited. It seemed like he had to do that a lot. Micky was
