The sun had shifted in the sky by the time we retraced our steps through the maze. Upon emerging, I felt our mother's gaze upon me, as cold as winter's first frost. We navigated the garden party with care, skirting young Henry Harrington's attempt to pull our skirts and seeking refuge behind topiaries and statues—anything to delay the inevitable confrontation with Mama.

When the time came to leave, the walk back to Longbourn was fraught with tension. Our mother's silence bore down on us like a storm cloud waiting to burst. At last, as the familiar silhouette of our home appeared on the horizon, I attempted to bridge the chasm of disapproval.

"Mama, I—" My words faltered as she cut me off with a cold precision.

"I do not wish to speak to you right now, Elizabeth," she declared, her tone brittle. "Your display today has brought nothing but shame upon us."

"Mrs. Harrington's judgment was unjust, Mama. I only sought to⁠—"

"Enough!" She silenced me with a look sharp enough to cleave stone. "Who is this man whom you so boldly claim as your future husband? A figment of your imagination, no doubt!"

"Mama, I did NOT lie..." I protested, but the shake of my father's head extinguished any hope of absolution. There was no point in continuing when she was this angry.

With each step toward Longbourn, I wished fervently for a return to my old life—or was it my future life? Whichever it was, this existence, with its stifling conventions and misjudgments, was proving unbearable. As we crossed the threshold of our home, the door closing with a resolute thud, I knew that somehow, someway, I must find my way back.
