CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Something woke Maggie from a deep and peaceful sleep. Before she’d opened her eyes, she was aware of warm skin pressed against her back. Her naked back. She was aware of the sound of peaceful sleep breathing and the rise and fall of his chest, pressing and releasing against her back. She was aware of the weight of his arm across her waist, and his hand nestled gently against her breast. She smiled, eyes still closed and replayed moments from the previous night. Warm feelings rushed around her body, and desire pooled in the pit of her belly and below, and she wondered, could they? She wanted to reach back and feel him. All of him and any of him, and to feel him there. She lay still, keeping her eyes closed. She reached back behind her and ran her fingertips gently up his thigh and then let her hand venture down, behind her bottom, finding him almost ready and growing with her touch.

‘Hello.’

A little voice had her open her eyes with a fright.

‘Mary!’

She felt George shuffle back and down in the bed. He pulled the blankets up and over his head. Maggie pulled her blanket up to her neck and hoped her breast hadn’t been exposed. She was relieved when she saw Charlie through the door, which was now wide open, running past, playing his favourite aeroplane game, and making the sound of an engine.

‘What y’ doing?’ Mary asked in her wise way, eyes seemingly all-seeing and all-knowing.

‘I slept in.’ Maggie said, trying not to sound phased, blanket held tight around her neck.

Mary walked tentatively toward the bed. Charlie ran past in the hall again, stopped for a moment and peered through the door before quickly losing interest and running off again, calling out for Mary. Mary shuffled another step closer, and Maggie shuffled back in the bed and away. She wasn’t sure why. She bumped up against George. The bed was small, and there was no room for him to escape. She tried not to smile when she felt him hard against her soft bottom. Mary held her hands up.

‘Can I?’

‘Oh, not this morning, darling. I’m about to get up and make brekkie. I’m running late. I better get up. Uncle George will be looking for his breakfast in a minute, and I won’t be ready.’ Maggie pulled a sorry face.

‘Unca George.’ Mary said and stood on her tiptoes as though trying to look over and past Maggie. Maggie felt her face colour bright red. Busted. They’d been found out. Now they could only rely on Mary not being able to suddenly string a sophisticated and coherent sentence together when Jack and Rosie got home, revealing all.

After much persuasion, Mary finally left the room and went in search of her brother, who’d gone back to their bedroom. Maggie leapt out of bed, unthinking, crossed the room and shut the door, and pulled a chair across it so it couldn’t be opened again before they’d been able to make themselves decent.
