Chapter 14 - Privacy for the Lovebirds

“Sect Leader,” I said, “it sounds to me like the Saitos are basically trying to do the same thing as you. Why not sit down and talk with them? Maybe work out some sort of deal.”

Yu Yitai smiled faintly. “Many, many years ago, I was close friends with Johan Saito’s grandfather. But I learned early on that he was only loyal to his clan, and ultimately, himself. His progeny have all followed in his footsteps. I’ve experienced it personally. Trust me when I say that the Saitos will stab you in the back the moment it suits them, and they’ll sacrifice anyone they feel necessary to achieve their goals.”

When he said the word ‘sacrifice,’ a lightbulb went on in my head.

“Sect Leader, there’s something I need to tell you.”

With that, I went into the story of Jakobe. Elena took over when it came to the taṇhā worm and the spell formation she’d created to remove it. And I concluded by explaining our belief that doing so while he was under the influence of nitrotropin eroprodol had somehow bestowed him with the ability to see the future.

Yu Yitai was visibly surprised, but not as much as I expected him to be. “Throughout the history of cultivation,” he said, “there have only been three people who developed the ability to glimpse the future. If your friend Jakobe has acquired this gift, he would be the fourth. What sort of things did he see?”

I described some of the past events Jakobe had successfully foretold, and then I explained his vision of Elena, stretched out over a sacrificial altar in the True Heaven. I even mentioned how Jakobe had seen Yu Yitai himself, to which he responded with no small amount of shock.

After I was done, he sat there quietly, his elbows resting on the arms of the chair and his fingers interlocked in front of him. “And you say Jakobe believes these to be glimpses of certain future events? Not possibilities?”

“So far, everything he’s seen has played out exactly as he saw it. Sect Leader, this is an area where Elena, er, Eldress Ávila, and I have differing opinions. I’m not particularly fond of the idea of sending her right into the hands of Johan Saito or whoever else it is that wants to plunge that knife into her chest.”

“Sect Leader,” Elena said, “Wang Fan’s just being overprotective. Johan Saito has my blood, and I want it back. I want to go after him. And I don’t think some dream is any reason to just give up. I know Wang Fan is just looking out for me, but still.”

He looked back and forth between the two of us. “Ah, so the two of you…?”

She looked away with a shy smile, and I gave a curt nod.

Yu Yitai chuckled. “I should have expected.” Then he sighed, and any trace of a smile faded from his face. “Perhaps we can discuss this matter further after I’ve interrogated Nicolas Kun. If I were to make a bet, I’d say the figure in Jakobe’s dream is indeed Johan Saito.
