Hidden Oasis
The carriage bumped, rocked, and creaked across the gravel road as Joey led Sprout by the reins. Valerie watched the lush hills of grass and wildflowers slide by as they made progress towards a destination she didnât know. Small talk filled the air between Joey and her. They talked about everything from their favorite color to what they filled their days with in their free-time.
The longer she spent with him, the more she fell for him. And the more she wanted this to work out. He was the perfect man for her, and she couldn't imagine how unlike a prince he behaved. Who would've thought a girl like her would be the love of interest to one of the three princes? The idea still perplexed her.
Joey pulled on the reins and brought the carriage to a halt. Sprout snorted his protest about stopping, but he listened to his master. Valerie looked around and saw tall trees nearby, but nothing out of the ordinary. There was a hill up beyond the tree line. She wondered if that was their destination.
Valerie watched Joey dismount from the carriage and, as any gentlemen would do, he offered his hand. She grasped it and stepped onto the ground. He dusted off his vest and smiled at her.
âWe are almost there.â
âWhere are we going?â she asked, raising an eyebrow.
He smiled and pulled out a piece of cloth.
âMay I?â
She looked at him with uncertainty. Valerie wasnât sure she wanted to be blindfolded. It involved putting a lot of trust in him. The idea seemed preposterous at first, but the more she thought about it, the more she realized her trust in him had grown. Stepping forward, she pulled back her hair, allowing him access to her head. In the blink of an eye, darkness enveloped her, and nothing but a small glimmer of light guided her through the dark fabric.
âYou promise to take care of me, right?â
He chuckled and wrapped an arm around her waist.
âI would never dream of hurting you,â he whispered softly into her ear.
Joey gripped her shoulders and pressed against her body to motion her forward. They climbed a hill from the sloped ground they tracked through. At least that is what she thought. She almost stumbled a few times, but Joey was there to catch her. Before she knew it, he was drawing her to a stop and placing his hands on her hips.
âAre we there?â
âYes.â
She smiled nervously. What could it be that he wants to show me? And why is it out in the middle of nowhere? His hands slid up her arms, to her shoulders, then took hold of the fabric by her ears. Gently, he untied the fabric and dropped the barrier between her eyes. She closed her eyes on impulse. Valerie wasnât sure she was ready to see what Joey had to show her. She hoped she liked it, but what if she didnât?
âYou can open your eyes,â he said, while stroking her cheek.
Her eyes peeked open and saw the sun glowing on his skin.
