Galileo got another surprise when he turned his telescope to view the planet Venus. Over several weeks, he saw different amounts of the planet’s surface were lit by the sun. We now know that the same thing happens to the Moon as it orbits Earth — the sunlit part grows and shrinks. It could only mean that Venus was orbiting the sun. Copernicus was right.

Starry Messenger

Galileo published his discoveries in a book called Starry Messenger. The book was a great success, and he got many new orders for telescopes. However, the Roman Catholic Church was not pleased that Galileo said Copernicus was right.
