I know this alley. It looks so familiar but I canât quite place it , he thought to himself upon entering.
He slowly stepped forward, glancing from right to left, searching for a clue to where his current location was. The stone block buildings lining the alley were heavily weathered, as if hundreds of years old. He cautiously approached the left side, carefully observing the salt crystallization on the base of the building as he touched several blocks, feeling the grooves and holes that had been formed over decades of slow dissolution. He had been here before, acknowledging the dull red coloring of the blocks used for this building.
As he continued walking down the alleyway, he noticed a specific pattern to the color of the buildings on both sides. Red, beige, and white repeated over and over again, without a mishap in pattern. With the exception of the color, the block buildings were nothing alike however. Multi-storied inns looked down on single-storied markets or taverns. In addition to the levels, no two buildings were built of the same size blocks. The variation in block size was exceptional, from a small brick to a cubic ton.
After clearing a rusty, beige awning over-hanging half of the alleyway, he found himself in the middle of an intersection where a new alleyway crossed his. Four multi-storied buildings boxed him in as he looked up into the clear blue sky, observing a single gull flying overhead. As he stood in the middle of the intersection, contemplating where he was, a decision had to be made - continue forward along the patterned buildings of the alleyway, or turn left or right. His first instinct was to continue down the path that he had started, following the salt weathered buildings and their odd repeating colorization. But something caught his eye to his right as he looked down this new alley. All of the buildings to his right were the same color - that dull, weathered red. In addition, they were all two-storied, windowless and doorless. Observing the alley from his point of view made it seem as though there were two dull red walls that continued on forever. There was something in the middle of the alley, bright white as if glowing. It was so far away it was hard to tell what it was. His inquisitive nature got the better of him and he turned right.
Walking along the left side of this new alley with his hand gently sliding against the textured stone blocks of the wall, he noticed the bright, white object move slightly. The shock of the movement caused him to halt his progress, with squinted eyes fixated in front of him. He decided to call out and see if a response would be returned.
âHello! Whoâs there?â
The object didnât respond, but a series of movements subsided due to his loud shout. Whatever it was, it knew he was there, watching from a distance. Intrigue continued to pulsate through his veins as he marched forward at a steady pace.
