Oskar went back to his room. He sat down on the bed. A smile came over his face.

I am truly superior, he thought. Kara loved the coat. I was smart enough to set my superior officer up with my young secretary so he wouldn’t be around. If he had been, I would never have been able to steal a necklace and a coat. But as luck would have it, I got into the supply of goods that the Reich has stored, the stuff they take from the Jews who arrive at Auschwitz and go directly to the gas. There is no doubt that there are some beautiful and valuable things in there. And my darling Kara, who would never think of shopping in the Jewish ghetto, will never know that her gifts came from that special place. That place the prisoners call Kanada.
