CHAPTER 18
DAY 6
Sarah believed she was lying down but couldnât be sure. Her eyelids felt so heavy, but she had to try to open them, as she needed to find out where she was. She only managed a blink at best. She couldnât see anything. After multiple attempts, all she could make out was a bright light and a shadowy figure holding a knife. She wasnât sure what was real or if it were just some trick her mind was playing, as it didnât have the visual information required to fill in the gaps. She made another attempt but couldnât. She just surrendered to the drug and went back to sleep.
Oh, Tanner, why couldnât you have been direct with me, told me everything I needed to know? You were always obsessed with this mysterious organisation and made me aware of it, but that was over five years ago. Damn you, you should have warned me properly, given me the appropriate heads-up, so I could have protected myself befittingly. It was not currently at the front of my mind, so how was I to get your little clue straightaway?
Was I stupid for not always thinking about it? But if I let it occupy my every thought, then I would have become like you. And you did bloody stitch me up. If youâd told me, I would have been on guard, more so than I usually am. From everything you said and I learnt, they are above the law. They are renegades, they are dangerous, they are the type of group that can destroy a part of a hospital, to have you killed and make it look like an accident. They are the sort to leave me unconscious somewhere. Thank you very much.
Find Megan North, because she would have been able to tell me about Tom Dentonâshe might have known something about his involvement in the system. Was she involved? Did she have any marks? Did they create the mysterious green substance found in her body? If so, for what purpose, what does it do? Why ask her and not Tom? Because he was dead, quickly disposed of.
He is the third person I have seen with the tallyâthe stitches. He had seven, so he was pretty involvedâhe must have had some information. We could have found out more about the Stitchin than we knew before. Thatâs the connection, thatâs why you wanted me to find her. But sheâs dead, Tomâs dead, youâre dead and I guess I am about to join you all soon. No I wonât.
Sarahâs eyes flickered open. She shut them again, as there was that bright light directly above her. As she became more aware of her surroundings, even with her eyes shut, she could not ignore the pain in her chest. It felt like someone had punched her hard on her left breast. She lifted her right arm to examine herself, but it only moved a couple of inches, as some strap around her wrist prevented her. She snapped her eyes open and lifted her head to survey herself.
