Chapter Nineteen
Diane took a seat on a park bench, crossing her legs as she sat back and watched the world go by. The temperature this evening was perfect for a moment of reflection outside, but Diane didnât particularly want to be here. No, she was avoiding going home. She hadnât spoken to Hayley since last night when they cleared things up, but Diane had felt dreadful about the whole situation all day at work. Sheâd woken up with a heavy feeling, rushed out the house when she heard Hayley up and about above her, and now she was avoiding seeing her.
Because what exactly would she say?
Sorry for accusing you of sleeping around. Sorry for being a needy bitch when we specifically agreed not to allow things to get to that stage. Diane didnât know where to begin with her apologies. Because she had told Hayley she knew what this was. Then that moment arrived when Hayley confirmed that this was just sex, and Diane had lost it. Why? Hayley had never once insinuated that they were exclusive. She hadnât hinted at any idea of her staying or wanting to be with Diane. Hayley was right. This was just sex. The sooner Diane fully came to terms with that, the sooner she could accept the fact that Hayley wasnât hers to keep. She never would be.
Diane may be the one with the supposed life experience and years on Hayley here, but she was out of her depth. Sheâd never been in this position or felt this way. Sheâd never been flirted with, looked at as though someone wanted her, or anything of the kind. Okay, Carol had been the perfect partner, but that relationshipâthat part of her lifeâhad been so long ago that she barely remembered what kissing a woman felt like. For Hayley to be saying and doing all the right things now, Diane was struggling to separate her feelings from her needs.
If this had been man-related issues, Diane could have gone to Steph and hashed it all out. But as she sat here this evening, feeling as though she couldnât return to her own home, Diane realised she didnât have a single person she could turn to about this. Not Steph, no other friendsâ¦nobody. Had she really spent so long trying to remain faceless to everyone around her that she didnât have a single genuine friend to turn to? Yes, she had.
Swallowing as she took her phone from her coat pocket, Diane brought up Hayleyâs number and called it. Sheâd never shook like this; sheâd never felt so nervous. Diane, usually, could hold her own.
âHey!â Hayleyâs chirpy voice was music to her ears. But dread remained in the pit of Dianeâs stomach. She had to stop enjoying every little thing Hayley did. It was only hurting her.
âHi. Iâ¦was wondering if we could talk when I got home?â
âSure. I was hoping to catch you this morning, but you left really early.â
âWork, you know?â Diane toyed with the strap of her handbag.
