Chapter 11
Kael
They were off, and I was alone in the darkened house, waiting for what I knew was probably my last battle. All I knew was that I had to try to stop Sebastian or at least slow him down. I wasnât sure that I could do that. He was the better swordsman and had always been more aggressive. I remembered how heâd been overpowering at times when we were lovers. I didnât want to face him.
It was a long wait in the upstairs bedroom, waiting for him to arrive. For a moment, I worried that heâd predicted my actions and had gone after Fiore and the boys. Then I heard the horses in the drive. Heâd brought a couple of friends, at least. I sighed. Fighting off one would have been easier than fighting off three. He was a coward. He shouldâve come for me on his own. Moments later, the door smashed in. Then I heard his voice, angry and determined. âFind the traitor and bring him to me. We need him alive to face the king.â
I heard a commotion from the stairs echoed in the hall. The door flew open, and two men rushed forward, swords out. I drew my sword and quickly dispatched them. They laid on my floor, their blood pooling in front of me.
âI didnât expect them to win.â I looked up, and he stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame. âHello, Kael. Perhaps you should make this easy on yourself and tell me where the whore and his nephews are.â
âDonât speak ill of my spouse.â I was trying to sound brave, but I certainly didnât feel it. âIâll tell you nothing.â
âPity,â he said, âI was so hoping that I wouldnât have to attend your execution.â
âI think youâll have to defeat me first.â
âYou say that like you think itâll be hard.â He drew his blade slowly so that the ring of the blade lasted longer than usual. There was a momentâs hesitation and then a vicious jab. I deflected it and returned the thrust, and then the battle began in earnest. Wild slashes flew as blade met blade. He grabbed my arm and tossed me out into the hall. Following quickly after me, I cried out as his sword pierced my left arm. Finally, I was able to get my right arm up to meet his blows.
He kicked me, and I fell down the stairs that were somehow behind me now. I laid at the bottom of the stairs, breathing hard and feeling every joint in my body scream with pain. He descended the stairs slowly. He stood over me, a smug smile on his face. âI expected better. Imagine my disappointment.â
âIâd rather not.â
He kicked my sword away. âI think weâre done here.â
âFuck you!â
In moments, he was on me, flipping me onto my back and gripping my wrists in a painful grip. One of his knees dug into my thigh. His face was within inches of mine, and I could see the fire in his eyes.
