The Kitchen Sink WHAT YOU NEVER CONSIDERED

Odd though it may seem to be mulling kitchen design in a pasta chapter, consider how much time you spend at the sink draining pasta, rinsing mops, piling dishes, washing dogs, rinsing produce—you get the picture.

Our contributor Deborah Krasner, a cookbook and design author, is a kitchen designer who cooks (dare we say a rare combination?). She believes that choosing the right sink is one of the most important kitchen design decisions you make.

Sink Thinking from Deborah Krasner:

YOUR PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SINK Think about your arm reach, your height, and the depth of the sink. Deb believes we need to get back to the farmhouse sinks, the ones that hang off the wall and can be set at any height with a faucet that comes out to meet you, instead of you leaning in to meet the faucet. You should be able to stand relaxed, belly to the sink, with no straining when you work. If you’re under 5 foot 3, go for a shallow sink with a bottom you can reach easily. If you’re tall, you’ll be comfortable with a deeper sink.
