Dear God. We’d made it through. Not only had I crossed the boundary of the gates the way a free man might, but we’d moved a block down the city street, beyond the property altogether. We walked along the thoroughfare, Kate’s hand clasped tightly in mine.

Suddenly, she stopped in the very center of the sidewalk and her face lit. “We did it. Oh my God, you’re—”

“Don’t.” I pressed my lips against Kate’s, silencing her.

Her mouth came alive as she parted her lips against the onslaught. She whimpered, pressing her body against me, sweeping her tongue along mine. Every part of me awakened then, drawn in by her kiss, and our closeness. I broke the kiss, losing myself in the depths of her gray eyes, wanting to get lost in the rest of her.

“You’ll be the death of me, Katherine,” I whispered, drawing her closer, her warmth making me feel every degree of cold that filled the air around us. It wasn’t enough. I wanted Kate wrapped around me, her skin against mine.

No. That couldn’t happen. It was one thing to love her as I did, to kiss her, to want her. Making love to Kate would cross every boundary of propriety. I couldn’t allow that, even if she seemed wholly unconcerned about her virtue.

A smile took over her face, making her seem, for an instant, like a glorious angel beneath the rays of the winter sun. She took my breath away.

“Griffin, aren’t you happy? We made it outside.”

I couldn’t risk any excitement at passing through the gates. Not yet. Otherwise, I’d never be able to stand it if I found myself forced to return.

“I am happy. Perhaps . . . overwhelmed is a better word choice.” I’d say no more, lest I undid my good fortune. “Mozart, Piano Sonata, No. 5, in G major, Allegro.”

“What’s that?”

Taking her hand, I led her down the street. Ridge Avenue, I believed it was called. “My favorite rainy-day music. It sounds like raindrops to me.”

“I don’t know that one. Will you play it for me?” She turned away and the sun might as well have set.

“Of course. It will be the best performance you’ve ever experienced.”

She chuckled, but remained silent, allowing me to take in my surroundings.

“Do you want to catch a bus? We can walk, but it’s kind of cold.” Kate wrapped her arms around her torso and mimicked shivering.

“Let’s walk. If you don’t mind.” After being confined to the estate for so many years, I didn’t want to take my eyes from my surroundings. I had no interest in stepping onto one of the great machines when I could stretch my legs.

It had been many years since my coming to Pittsburgh. I could say with certainty that the avenue hadn’t looked like that when I’d first arrived. Mammoth buildings rose from the ground in all shapes and sizes. Some of the original homes still remained on the opposite side of the street, but boasted signs declaring them as businesses. People walked every which way, most with packs slung over their shoulders.
