Chapter 12
Emerald only had a vague recollection of the past three days. She could never remember being as sick as she had been. To not remember what had happened, it didnât necessarily terrify her. She knew between Erica and Lilian she had been in good hands. Still, it was unsettling not to remember exactly what had happened. What was worse, her boyfriend had become nearly sullen. The bar owner was reduced to one word answers most of the time.
Even when they had first met, Rules had always seemed to have something in return to say. There were actual words strung together to form sentences. Emerald glanced around the beauty surrounding her. It was difficult to appreciate what she saw when she thought about Erica. Had she done or said something while she was sick? Had she finally let slip she knew, and had known for quite some time, that Eric was really Erica in disguise?
The singer leaned against the white railing. The porch wrapped around the entire house. House? It was more like a mansion. It was three stories, not two. There was a wraparound porch on each level. There were half a dozen pillars supporting the roof in front. Only having seen pictures of the south in magazines and newspaper articles, Emerald hadnât been certain what to expect. This was, from what sheâd seen in those pictures, something rather ordinary.
And yet, it was nothing like she had ever seen in Chicago. Emerald wasnât proud to admit she had been to the richest part of the city. What was considered a mansion back home was nothing compared to what was considered an ordinary house here. From the caretaker, they had been given a brief history of the house. Both she and Erica knew the man was keeping things from them. From what had been told, this house had been rebuilt after The Civil War.
That was where the brief history had ended. Why had Ericaâs mother left the south? How had her father met her mother? Elton Chase had been born in Chicago. His parents had also been born in the great city. There had been little to no traveling by the patriarch. So how had a Southern Belle met and fallen in love with a Yankee? It was a story Emerald was determined to discover. One day she would know everything there was to know about Rules.
Like what had happened over the previous three days. She heard before she felt her sisterâs presence. Emerald didnât bother moving. She waited patiently for Lilian to stop beside her. The younger woman was hiding something. It wasnât merely how quiet Lilian had become, almost as quiet as Erica. It was avoidance. There were few times her sister would avoid her. Normally it revolved around something the singer had done that was not approved of.
Like a stone skipping in water, she repeatedly asked herself what had happened. What had happened apparently had affected Lilian as much, if not more than Erica. The problem was; Lilian and Erica were so much alike.
