CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Whiteness filled Flea’s vision even after the bright white light of dust travel faded away. Having little experience dust traveling by himself, Flea worried he’d done something wrong, not hard to imagine considering how much of a rush he’d been in. While rushing through the tunnels, Flea suddenly realized several things: the night before was a full moon, he’d been living in quiet darkness, his pillow had been dusty when he awoke…
His mother was a dustmaker, an important quality he’d inherited from her. With Jack Frost hot on his trail, Flea had headed toward the master bedroom upon reaching his apartment, trying to make as little noise as possible. He’d found a small pile of dust on his pillow and worried it might not be enough to get him back to the North Pole. Out of options, it was his only chance. He sprinkled the dust above his head, making sure to release every last speck. He felt the slightest pull on his body and didn’t think there would be enough to leave. But just as the nearby bedroom wall exploded inward, Flea was surrounded by his own explosion of bright light…
Am I back outside the city limits where I first showed up? Flea wondered. His next thought made him gulp. Or am I back outside the South Pole border?
Luckily, he did not see frozen skyscrapers or an ice prison when he looked around. The snow fell heavier than ever and when he took a few steps forward, he saw the tattered ruins of the North Pole’s protective snow wall. Just like in his dream – or had it actually been a vision? – the wall was completely down in some areas, while the sections that remained standing looked like they could crumble at any moment. The wall wasn’t the only part of the village in disarray. The few buildings he could see also suffered serious damage, though the full extent was tough to tell since so much was covered in snow.
The destruction wasn’t the most worrisome part for Flea, though. Despite his vision, he’d hoped to find a battle still raging within the North Pole village. What he found was just the opposite: quiet emptiness.
At least mostly empty, he thought as he spotted movement through the falling sheets of snow. He wanted to call out to whoever was out there, to find out what had happened to the war and the rest of the elves. But he had to consider his appearance and how his new look might frighten unsuspecting elves. He slowly approached the elves coming out of the dormitory but soon discovered they weren’t elves at all. He did not know what was more disconcerting: the fact there were South Pole snowmen inside the village limits or the casual manner with which they emerged from the dorm. There was not a single elf in sight, which made Flea’s stomach drop.
There’s no way Army snowmen could move among our buildings if there were any elves left to stop them.
