David’s cell phone was ringing.

He stared at it in surprise. He’d had the phone for six months and other than his parents and Froggy calling, it never rang.

But now he had a call!

And it was from a number he didn’t recognize!

He scrambled to answer it before it stopped ringing, unclipping it from the holder on his belt. “Hello?” he said.

“It’s me. Shawna.”

“Hey, Shawna. What’s up?”

And then he remembered what he had told Shawna the night before. About calling him if she needed a date for Friday night’s dance. It couldn’t be, could it? His heart began beating with excitement, and butterflies began doing somersaults in his stomach. He didn’t even dare to hope! But then why would she be calling him?

He looked across the cafeteria to where she usually sat, but her seat was empty. “Where are you?”

“Meet me by the soda machine in five minutes. We’ll talk there.”

Before David could say anything else, Shawna hung up.

“What was that all about?” Froggy asked, flipping through the copy of the Star Trek novel David’s Secret Santa had left for him that morning. David had already read it so he’d given it to Froggy. So far his Secret Santa has struck out twice, giving him gifts he already owned. Well, at least he was getting gifts. Froggy hadn’t received anything yet from his Secret Santa. “Why’s Shawna calling?”

David shrugged. “I don’t know.” He hadn’t told Froggy about having had dinner at Shawna’s house. He felt guilty for keeping a secret from his best friend, but he’d promised Shawna he wouldn’t say anything. Besides, he and Froggy hadn’t told each other who they’d picked from the Secret Santa bag. It was kind of the same thing. He got up from his seat. “But I’m about to find out.”
