Chapter Twenty-Eight

Willow

I feel like I could be in one of those memes where it shows how someone thinks they look compared to how they actually do—for instance, right now I’m gliding gracefully around the rink, hair perfectly windswept, arms in the air like I’m flying, my footwork…perfection. When in reality my arms are wide because I’m wobbling uncontrollably, my hair’s windswept, but only as I’m falling to the ground, and I’m flushed red. As promised, Jesse doesn’t let me hit the ice, and I’m grateful, but I’m still unstable.

“Why can’t I do this?” I laugh when Jesse catches me. Again.

“It takes time. We all have our talents. There’s no way these big hands could make fine jewelry.” He holds up one hand, the other holding on tightly to my waist.

He’s been doing that since we got here, giving me subtle compliments so I don’t feel embarrassed, and it’s working well to distract me. Only this time, I don’t think it’s his words. I’m more focused on the big hands he mentioned, and remembering them curled into my hair, pulling my head back as his lips meet mine.

“Willow?”

“Huh?”

“Do you want to try again?” Jesse asks with a slightly furrowed brow.

“Oh yes, definitely. I’m determined to skate by myself before we leave here today.”

Jesse looks at his watch. “Better get moving. I’ve only got the ice for another hour.”

Shit.

With all the patience in the world, Jesse continues to guide me. “That’s it,” he encourages with a huge smile when I finally grasp the ability to stand. “Now, I’m going to take you around,” he says when I’ve been standing on my own for a moment. “And all you have to do is hold on.”

That sounds easy enough, but I’ll bet it’s not. “Hold on. Okay. Got it.”

I hold on for dear life, one arm curled tightly around his with the other out to my side for extra balance. I can do this.

Jesse moves, and by some miracle, I actually stay up. “Okay, this is happening,” I say, eliciting a soft chuckle from beside me.

“You’re a natural,” he jokes and I huff out a laugh.

“You’ve already used up your quota of lies, remember?” I expect Jesse to laugh again, but he’s obviously not ready for that joke. “God, I’m sorry. That sucked.”

“Nah, it’s okay. I just…” he trails off but I get it. I shouldn’t have brought the mood down.

We skate in silence for half a song and then I get the crazy idea to try it alone. I’ve been slowly moving my feet rather than letting Jesse drag me along, and I genuinely think I’ve got it.

“I’m ready to fly,” I say before loosening my hold slightly, while Jesse’s eyes flash to mine, his brows rising.

“For real?”

“For real.”

“Okay, I’ll let go on three. But I’ll be right here beside you. You’ve got this.” My chest fills with warmth, and it’s his words that give me confidence, managing to glide the second he lets go. I actually glide.

“Am I really doing this?” I ask, my eyes focused on my feet, hoping Jesse hears me.
