Ash paddles, one side then the other, one side then the other. The rhythm helps to shut out images that flash into his mind, of Amliq, Tarth, Cryf and Blewog, streaked in blood, shot, and ripped: attacked by bird machines. He feels as if he’s just one paddle stroke ahead of being drowned in panic. His heart races and the tears rise into his eyes, but he paddles and paddles breathing them down. Inside himself Ash’s being draws itself into a tight knot, resilient, tough, determined to survive. Out of all this hurt and evil good will come. Something good. Somehow.

One side then the other.

They paddle on, smothered in the quiet of the mist. Swells move through the sea like breaths. In places the surface breaks into a crust, like fat on cooling soup, where sea is trying to turn into ice. From time to time they stop and listen. There’s a faint drone of an airship far to the east, snaps that might be gunfire or cracking ice floes. But at last even those sounds fade away.

Dough Boy looks at the still-sleeping Gula.

‘What is that thing anyway?’ he asks.

‘She’s a Gula, and she saved your life.’
