Memorandum from a reliable source making the rounds warns that Italy and Germany are not only recruiting British subjects but actively positioned for sabotage within Britain. Will ultimately render diplomatic relations impossible.

Pamela remembered Putlitz had told her how Britain should declare war on Germany now, so as to have the upper hand. She wondered if the reliable source was, in fact, Putlitz.

Later in the week, Pamela received two more interesting letters.

The first was from Diana Cooper, who had been on the infamous cruise on the Nahlin with Wallis and the King. She and Duff were annoyed that the King wouldn’t land to view the antiquities in Greece and called Delphi ‘Delhi’. Wallis was ‘wearing very badly’ and Duff was completely fed up with having to listen to the King’s ill-informed opinions on the different countries they’d visited and from having to apologise to every foreigner he offended. Diana wondered if she should cut the trip short before she threw them both overboard.

How had the pair of them managed to keep their affair out of the foreign press? After all, it was one thing to sneak around dinner parties in one’s own city but quite another to dock in half the countries on the Mediterranean in an enormous yacht.

The second letter was from Pamela’s friend Diana Vreeland, who had been making a splash in New York ever since she and her husband moved back from London earlier that year. She had somehow effortlessly managed to get herself a column at Harper’s Bazaar simply because the editor spotted her out dancing in a white lace Chanel gown. Diana wanted to know how on earth the British public was taking the news of their king being in cahoots with a married American.

Pamela was confused at first, until she realised that it was the American press who had been covering the Nahlin cruise, as well as the French, the Italian and several other countries. Apparently, every American was completely captivated by the fact that their compatriot had caught the eye of the King of England – a fairy tale come to life. Diana was amused by it all, having known Wallis from her days running a lingerie boutique in Mayfair.
