Chapter 7

Diffusion of Corruption in Poland

Grzegorz Makowski

Corruption is a social problem. At first this appears to be an obvious statement. However, a sociologist should never accept such a statement as an indisputable fact, because this sentence relates to two not necessarily identical phenomena – ‘corruption’ and ‘social problems’. Before I proceed to the fundamental part of this text, I wish to start with a general discussion of corruption as analysed as a social problem. It is indispensable to understand the Polish (and potentially not only Polish) specifics of this phenomenon, as well as the strong and weak points of the method of research and corruption analysis applied here.
