THIRTY-THREE

Bad and Worse

Mina waited fifteen minutes after the last of the sounds ended before trying to extricate herself from the closet. Any sooner than that and she might break out of one bad situation just to enter another.

There had been gunshots. Door-breaking, shouting, tire-squealing, and howls of pain. She’d been furious when Ash shoved her in here and locked the door, but now it was clear that he’d done her a life-saving favor.

What exactly had happened? Had there been more deaths? There’d already been one she knew of: poor Bryan, left in the dumpster. Had anyone survived?

Through it all, she’d at least taken comfort that no matter what, she had her phone in her pocket as a lifeline. Turned out there was no reason for comfort; the thing was useless. Service at the upstate lab had always been spotty, but inside the closet it was nonexistent. She’d put the phone in Low Battery Mode earlier when it reached critical levels, but now she considered shutting it off entirely.

Before the chaos, saving the last of her battery had felt smart. Now it felt essential. If she could get out of the closet, she could always use the lab’s landline … but whatever happened tonight had sounded like an armed invasion. Once she saw what was out there, she might not want to stick around. She might want to run like hell — and how important would her last few percent be then?

She checked the time and was just about to power the phone off when a silenced notification caught her eye:

21:00: DISCO DANCE PARTY.

Mina wasn’t much of a dancer. And not at all into disco. Even if she was, why would she need to set herself a reminder? This wasn’t an invitation. It was from her Notes app. And why was it in military time?

Despite her situation, Mina laughed a little. Some smartass — probably one of her own grad students — had gotten hold of her phone and added it as a joke. A weird way of saying, Loosen up, Mina.

She was still staring at the bright, battery-sucking screen fifteen seconds later. Despite knowing better, she still hadn’t shut the phone down because a new problem had occurred to her, and it was the Ghostbusters problem: Who ya gonna call, Mina? She didn’t want to call 911 once she got out of here; with NSA fears on her mind, that was a last resort. So who, then? Ash? If he was still alive — and had been in the car she heard driving away — then Ash was the logical choice. But she didn’t know his number. If her phone died, she couldn’t even call him from a landline without access to her contacts.

She had to look up his phone number now and write it down for later — just in case.

She surveyed her tiny surroundings, using precious screen light to do it. The closet, which was more linen than office supply, contained no pens or paper.

And so, with no
