Chapter 19: Odd Plans[JB9]

Puffs of steam and grinding of metal sounded from the long factory on the street. Windows panel on the side vented smoke, some from machines and some from the tobacco mouths of workers. Outside the building, men hauled large heavy crates to trucks. A large man with skin the color of coal hefted four crates at once onto the back of a truck. The engine rumbled to life he stood still as black exhaust spewed out over him. He lit a cigarette. The smoke from his mouth undisguisable from the vehicle and all of it muted by the thick brown haze that never left. This was the source of the world’s radios; Marconi’s New Street Works, the first global distributor and manufacturer of radios.

Allan breathed in the dark air with forced effort as he waited. It had been three days since he sent out his bounty across the city of London, and each morning after he came here to wait. Every time Stephenson didn’t show Allan wondered if he should have stayed in France at the hospital with Vera.

The morning after she’d rescued him they rode her bike towards the border, but any board the divide between France and Germany. The most heavily guarded and fortified place in the known world; the Maginot line. Endless rows of machine gun nests and heavy artillery pointed down at German outpost and far out of sight sniper, and scouts watched the movements of every Nazi soldier. When Hitler began threatening to invade other countries, the number of soldiers guarding the Line doubled. It had been Vera’s idea to cross there. The Nazi’s would be weary to cause too much a stir, least an edgy sniper decide to fire.

The Nazis saw the blood on Vera’s clothes and gave daggered looks as the two crossed the border into France, but they did not stop or slow them. Not even Hitler was foolish enough to challenge the Line.

Once inside France, Allan took Vera to the closest hospital. When she finally woke after her surgery, she demanded that Allan find Stephenson. She risked her life so the two could continue their work. If the assistant stayed with her, then it was all a waste. Alan didn’t want to go, but after arguing for an hour, she started throwing things at him. A fork, a tray, anything not bolted down she hurled at him. He waited a day and came back. As soon as he appeared in the doorway, she cursed at him and started throwing things again. So, Allan contacted Stephenson’s office then headed to London to find the man. Now, he waited for the army of street urchins to deliver his message.

From a distance the brown haze was thick, and Alan wondered why he couldn’t feel it on his hands, his skin. But his lungs felt it, fought with it to get the air out. Then out of an artificial fog of factories emerged Stephenson. He wasn’t dressed in his suit, but the coveralls of a laborer.
