Jerry understood what was happening pretty quickly, becoming both eased and terrified by it.

Whatever he and Julius touched wouldn’t harm them, not physically at least. Mentally, though? Yes; that wasn’t just possible, but fact. Because Jerry saw Julius standing in front of the tent and heard the same voice—the laughter, the taunting.

The Genesis couldn’t hurt the boy’s body—at least Jerry didn’t think so, but who the hell really knew what It could do? But, if It couldn’t hurt his body, then It would destroy his mind.

Jerry watched the boy begin to cry, heard him begging The Genesis to spare those in the tent. Julius didn’t understand—though he would very soon—that The Genesis spared no one. It operated with a ruthlessness humanity could only imagine, despite the spiel It gave Caesar five hundred years ago.

And now, if anyone needed proof, it was right here. Because Caesar killed those old lawmakers, breaking their necks like a fox does chicken bones. He was The Genesis now, and so he acted with the same ruthlessness.

The boy followed Jerry’s old mentee into the desert. He watched as Caesar killed, and killed, and killed.

Oh, yes—The Genesis may not be able to hurt Julius’s body, but his mind would be good enough.
