A snort and giggling pull me out of my slumber. I shiver, reaching for a blanket but come up empty. Murmurs and soft laughter continue, but the idea of opening my eyes sounds terrible.

I shift on my side, and take a deep breath.

“What are you laughing about?” I ask, still keeping my eyes shut.

“Nothing.” Sandy’s voice doesn’t sound too innocent.

I blink my eyes open, rubbing them with my fists, before I force myself into a sitting position. Sara and Sandy are sitting on the floor with the dog.

“What the…heck is he doing in here?” I glare at Sara, jaw clenching.

“I needed to feed him. He’s completely clean. I used up an entire bottle of shampoo, and he’s tick-free, but just in case, I sprayed him with that product you have for Caramel. Isn’t he adorable?” She grabs the dog’s mane and squeezes his face.

He doesn’t fight her. Instead, he leans into her, tail wagging like a boy desperate for her attention.

“By the way, I’m not the only one who drools. You, sir, left a big wet spot on the pillow you were cuddling with. Who knew you were a cuddler?” Sara points at me, laughing until she snorts. She covers her face, eyes widening, but I still see her cheeks turning pink. “And you snore like my cousin’s bulldog,” she murmurs behind her hand.

“So funny.” I shake my head.

“In all seriousness, how are you feeling? Do you want some tea?”

“Yuck.” Sandy sticks her tongue out.

“Sandy,” I warn. “Manners.”

“Sorry, Daddy, but her tea tastes bad and it smells funny.”

“It does not. My grandma used to make it for us when she’d visit and we were sick.”

“Are you sure it’s not poison?” Sandy giggles.

I break up their conversation. “I don’t want tea.”

“Too bad. You’re both drinking it. I promise you’ll feel like yourselves again tomorrow.” Sara stands, ignoring our complaints, and walks toward the kitchen.

Sandy plays with the dog, avoiding my eyes. I know what she’s doing. She’s going to try to sneak that dog into our home like she did with a turtle she found during a walk with my mom when she was six. I kept wondering why the lettuce was disappearing so quickly. Turns out, she was feeding it to the turtle. Unfortunately for the creature, her life was short-lived.

I grab my phone from my pocket where it’s stabbing my hip and check the time. It’s almost eight o’clock.

“It’s late,” I call out, sitting straighter.

“I already took a shower,” Sandy informs me. “Sara made me eat more soup for dinner.”

“Good, good. Sorry I fell asleep.”

“It’s okay, Daddy. You’re sick, too, and need rest. Do you know what would make you feel better?” Her eyebrows slightly lift.

“What?”

“Petting Buddy.”

“Buddy?” I tilt my head.

“Yeah, Sara called him that since he didn’t have a name, and he listened to her. I think he likes the name.”

“Probably because I used that nickname when I found him.”

“You see, he loves us. Please let me keep him. I promise I’ll feed him and give him a bath and brush his hair and everything.
