There’s chatter coming from the unit as I make my way down the hall and around the corner after breakfast the next morning. A pack of women hover near the opening of my cell, precisely where they don’t belong, and all I can think is that they’ve found my stash.

Which means I’m screwed.

I shove my way through the mob, surprised to find Ryerson inside my cell—day off, my ass—with an inmate I’ve never seen before.

And it looks like he’s doing an orientation of sorts.

“What’s going on? What the fuck are you doing in my cell?”

“Calm your tits, Rogers,” Ryerson says with a wave of his hand. “Finally got a roomie for you.”

Wink.

“I didn’t ask for company.”

“Neither did she.” He laughs like his joke is funny, but the punch line falls on deaf ears.

“There’s been a mistake. I’m supposed to have a private cell.”

“Not anymore.”

“Why not?”

“Let’s blame it on overcrowding. So many offenders these days,” he says, shaking his head like he thinks it’s a shame. “Mulligan, meet Rogers. Rogers, Mulligan. Try not to kill each other, ladies.” He chuckles to himself again when he turns to leave, heading back to his post where he’ll start the headcount in two minutes.

I want to plop myself on the ground and throw a tantrum, but such behavior won’t help me establish dominance in this cell once the door closes, so I stand with my back against the brick wall, my new cellmate next to me doing the same.

“This is a dick move, Ryerson!”

But he waves me off with a flip of his hand.

After count, Mulligan and I return our cell, the door latching behind us as the locks kick in. My new cellmate breathes loudly because apparently, she’s under duress at the notion of bunking with me, of all people.

That’s good.

I can work with that.

But what the fuck is up with Ryerson screwing me over like this?

“What’s your name?” Mulligan asks, as if she didn’t just hear Ryerson introduce us. I can practically smell the fear on her, see the tension in her shoulders as she stands there like a lost child in the grocery store.

“Don’t.”

“I can’t ask a question?”

“You just did.”

“Where can I put my stuff?”

“What stuff?”

“Aren’t I supposed to get one of these shelves?” she asks, pointing.

“Can’t you see they’re in use?”

“Look, I’m sorry they sprung me on you. I’ll stay out of your way, if that’s what you want, but there’s no need to be a b—”

“Don’t you dare finish that sentence,” I bark, cutting her off and taking a hard stance in front of her before pushing up in her face.

“I don’t want any trouble,” she whines, her arms up in the air defensively. I consider hitting her, just once to set her straight, but sometimes fear is best instilled through words.

And I don’t feel like getting my hands dirty today.

“You see that panic button on the wall over there, Mulligan?” She nods uneasily. “Doesn’t work. Don’t ever push it.”

“What happens if I do?”

“You’ll be dead before help comes through the door.
