The kitchen is tougher than the first storage room, which had been books and knicknacks and files. The fridge thankfully is empty and unplugged, so no surprises there, but Jake canât believe how much stuff is in the cupboards. There are cobwebs and crusted-over pans from ages ago, and Emily gags at the smell of them when they dig them out. With gloves, they manage to dump all the unusable cookware into the trash, and finally get everything out of the pantry.
âDonât eat that!â Jake says in horror, grabbing a box of Twinkies out of Tankâs hands.
Tank takes another bite out of the one heâs already unwrapped. âItâs still good.â
âYouâre gonna get sick!â Jake flips the box over. âThe expiration date on these wasâoh. I guess theyâre still goodâ¦When did these get here?â
âThereâs so many preservatives in these, theyâre fine. I mean, it probably doesnât taste good. Only one way to test, though.â Emily holds her hands open.
Tank reaches into the box in Jakeâs still-shocked hands and tosses one at Emily.
She bites into the cake and shrugs. âNot the best. Bet it would be great deep-fried. You wanna try?â
Jake shakes his head.
âOh, come on.â Emily grins at him. âYou scared?â
âNo way!â Jake takes a Twinkie out of the box and unwraps it. It looks like a normal Twinkie, unnaturally yellow, and bits of cream on the wrapper. He takes a tentative bite.
âTastes like a Twinkie,â he admits.
Tank brings the box with them back to the computer lab, where they get to work mining and gathering what they need for the Potions of Water Breathing. âI think weâre all set,â Tank says. âGot the sand, made the glass, plenty of glass bottles. You know what would be pretty? A greenhouse. Iâve made one beforeâI mean, you canât really grow crops in it, but theyâre real pretty with the glass walls.â
âSounds nice, Tank,â Emily says. âSo we have everything we need for the potions?â
âNether wart,â Jake says.
The three of them exchange nervous looks.
Emily is the first one to say it, her mouth hardened into a tough line. âWe need to go to the Nether.â
Jakeâs phone beeps.
