•Biopsy, which is examined and tested for cancer’s hallmark changes. However, biopsies may miss 30 per cent of HCCs. Between 1 and 5 per cent of biopsies allow the cancer to spread to another part of the liver.

•Blood tests, including liver function tests and measuring blood levels of a chemical called alpha-fetoprotein. Normally, foetuses produce alpha-fetoprotein. However, blood levels increase in about 60 per cent of people with liver cancer.

•Imaging By looking for changes between visits, ultrasonography can detect around 90 per cent of tumours before symptoms develop. Ultrasonography is more likely to miss tumours that are already present at the first visit because the doctors do not have a previous image. Overall, ultrasonography detects around 60–80 per cent of liver cancers. Doctors may suggest using CT or MRI to detect the cancer.
